Step back in time and experience the roots of Morrow County. From family farms that started it all to the small towns that grew around them, history lives on in every corner of our community.

Take a journey through time and explore the history that built Morrow County. From the first settlements to the founding of our county lines, there’s a fascinating story waiting to be uncovered!

1800

Early Settlement & Growth

Long before the county’s founding, the land was home to Native American peoples who traveled its streams and woodlands. By the early 1800s, pioneer families began settling in the area, clearing land for farms and building the small villages that still dot the countryside today. Agriculture quickly became the backbone of the county, a tradition that continues in the rolling fields and family farms you’ll see across the region.

1848

A County Carved from Four

Morrow County was officially established in 1848, making it one of Ohio’s later-formed counties. Its boundaries were drawn from pieces of Delaware, Knox, Marion, and Richland Counties. The county is named for Jeremiah Morrow, Ohio’s ninth governor and the state’s first U.S. senator.

1850

A Tradition of Gathering

Community has always been at the center of Morrow County’s story. The Morrow County Fair, held annually since the 1850s, is a celebration of farming heritage, craftsmanship, and hometown fun. From church socials to barn dances, from quilting circles to today’s festivals, Morrow County has long been a place where people come together.

1852

Architectural & Cultural Heritage

From the Greek Revival–style Morrow County Courthouse (built in 1852) to 19th-century churches, mills, and farmhouses, the county offers glimpses into early Ohio life. Villages like Chesterville and Johnsville still carry the character of those early settlements, with historic homes and community landmarks that tell stories of resilience and neighborly pride.

1919

Mount Gilead - The Heart of the County

The county seat, Mount Gilead, is known for its beautiful courthouse square and historic architecture. In the heart of the square stands the Victory Shaft, one of only a few memorials of its kind in the nation. It was awarded to the community after Morrow County purchased the most World War I Liberty War Bonds per capita in the United States—a proud legacy of patriotism and community spirit.
